English: Gilded copper-alloy small square-headed brooch. Pin missing. Early Early-Medieval, sixth century. Length 33.8mm, maximum width 11.8mm and 2.5mm thick. Weight 4.22g. Although The outside edge of the rectangular head-plate frame is very eroded it can be determined that the frame was decorated with regularly spaced ?punched "discs". The head-plate second panel is in the form of a raised plain moulding and contains the head-plate inner panel which has a rectangular raised moulding containing three short vertical mouldings. The bow is gently arched and convex at the front, flat at the rear. At the front the bow is decorated with two vertical grooves. The expanded foot-plate tapers in outline towards the terminal. Each foot-plate upper borders contains a crescent-shaped moulding and the foot-plate inner panel frame is a raised lozenge-shaped moulding. The foot-plate inner panel consists of a raised solid lozenge. Viewed from the front, the left hand foot-plate lower border is decorated with ?punched "discs" similar to those in the head-plate frame. The right hand foot-plate lower border was probably decorated in the same manner. However, decoration here has not survived due to erosion. The foot-plate terminal is sub-rectangular in shape and encloses a central vertical moulding (sub-rectangular in shape) which has a small central annulet. At either side of this decoration are three horizontal mouldings, one above the other. Two lugs to accommodate the iron pin hinge are situated directly behind the head-plate. The remains of the hinge mechanism are heavily corroded. A small catch-plate behind the foot-plate inner panel is complete.
