Title
Early Medieval silver strap end
Description
English: A complete early medieval silver strap-end dating from AD 750-1100, Class A type 1. The strap end is sub rectangular in shape with slightly convex sides, narrowing to a rounded terminal end. The central panel is decorated with a trewhiddle-style incised zoomorphic design, with a long necked creature with no legs at the attachment end, the tail leading into interlaced decoration below. Either side of the panel is a groove running the length of the strap end. The terminal end has a pointed snout and head with incised semi-circular notches either side forming the eyes. Above this is a incised triangle with vertical lines across, pointing towards the terminal end. Directly behind are two raised curved oval shapes, these possibly represent the ears.

The split end attachment has two rivet holes with the silver rivets still in situ. Below this is a incised semi circle. The reverse of the strap end is undecorated. There is a crack running across the strap end, 18.6mm from the terminal end. Due to this the strap end is no longer flat. The strap end is a silver grey colour, with the incised areas a dark brown. The strap end measures 40.8mm in length, 7.4mm in width, and 2.8mm in thickness. It weighs 3.59g.

The strap end is similar to ones shown in Thomas 2003, page 3 figure 1.
