Title
Early Medieval mount
Description
English: A cast copper alloy Early Medieval mount, probably dating from the 8th Century AD. The mount is ovoid in shape, and is domed, with a hollow reverse. The mount is in the form of an elongated man's face, with a three-dimensional front and a flat reverse. The face is long and thin, with a long nose in the centre, curvilinear raised lines projecting out from the top of the nose either side forming eyebrows. Underneath these are the eyes which are oval in shape, raised around the edges, and a raised pellet in the centre. The face is moustached and bearded, the moustache is a single raised line that curves round the mouth which is circular in shape. Below the mouth the beard projects down in vertical raised lines. Above the eye brows is a raised line around the forehead of the face. This is either depicting a helmet or a hairline. This part of the face is very worn, but raised decoration possibly in the form of fish scales is visible.

There is a pierced circular hole either side of the mount, just below each eye for attachment. Each hole is worn as if the item has been suspended from something. The mount has a dark green patina, with patches of gilding across the surface. On the underside the mount has a pale yellow surface.

The mount measures 21.00mm in length, 10.1mm in width, and 6.8mm in thickness. The mount weighs 4.53g.

The mount is similar to one shown in Leahy 2003, 146, 82, which is dated to the 8th century AD. Similar mounts on the database include BUC-8E1C04, YORYM-024D31 and HESH-616176.
