Title |
early Medieval lead disc brooch |
||
Description |
English: Early Medieval cast lead disc brooch, 37mm in diameter, 3mm thick and weighing 17.75grams. The brooch is slightly bent in places, giving it an irregular edge. It has a border made up of two lines of spherical pellets. Inside this border the brooch has a sub rectangular border made up of 8 sub-spherial knops, each of which are joined by two curving raised lines forming an elipse or 'petal' like motif. Inside this border is a cruciform pattern made up of a further four pairs of curved raised lines which run from the outer knops and converge onto a central sub sherical knop in the brooches centre.
The reverse of the brooch has a rectangular sectioned semi-circular catchplate? or lug which is about 5mm wide. On the opposite side, corressponding to the lug, is a small circular sectioned loop. The brooch is similar, but with a different outer border, to an example in Leahy, K. The Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Lindsey, p181 eg 1. |
