Title
Early Medieval lead alloy token
Description
English: A lead alloy uniface token, coin or other paranumismatic object of uncertain date. It is a disc of lead alloy which is 30.8mm in diameter and 1.57mm thick. The decorated face has a bust facing right surrounded by four crosses of wedges, and a chevron or possible letter A behind the bust. It also has a single line border round the edge. The edges are damaged, and there are stress marks where the object has been folded at some point. It has a dark grey patina with a cream colour in places. The find is from a site which has produced Early Medieval objects. An Early Medieval lead alloy token on the database is BERK-A96AE7 but a close parallel for this find has not yet been found. Compare also KENT-AC73A1, a lead alloy penny of Cnut. There is no evidence of attachment, making it unlikely to be a nummular brooch, though lead alloy examples are well known. It has been suggested that this object is a trial piece, but it seems unusually large for a coin design. Compare also SWYOR-EE8811 which is possibly a modern imitation of an Early Medieval coin.

This record has been examined by John Naylor (PAS National Finds Advisor), who feels that the piece is Post Medieval in date.
