Early Medieval great squared-headed brooch
Description
English: Early Medieval great squared-headed brooch head-plate, cast copper alloy with Style I decoration. The design consists of a series of concentric, rectangular panels intersperced with bands of plain, longitudinal ribs and ribs bearing transverse lines. In the angles of the distal rectangles are two lentoid motifs containing lines of notches. Between the lentoid motifs is a panel contain Style I zoomorphic decoration, the animals eyes present at the ends of the panel and indistinct limbs towards the centre. The central panel of the head-plate contains a face with two pellet eyes set beneath arched brows and a semi-circular nose. Either side of the face are is a four armed whirligig motif. The bow was also highly decorated but does not survive. On the underside of the head-plate are two lugs by which the iron coiled spring was attached. Length 36.0mm, Width 53.4mm, Height 8.5mm, Mass 32.61g.

This brooch closely resembles the example from Lakenheath, Suffolk (Hines 1997, Pl. 32a, p. 331) and can be assigned to Hines Group IX.
