Title
Early Medieval great square-headed brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period.
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy great square-headed brooch of the 6th century.

The brooch consists of only the bow and the centre of the headplate, with a gilded surface.

The bow has raised edges and a central ridge, connected by U-shaped troughs. The raised borders along each side have three narrow strips separated by incised lines, the central strip decorated to create a beaded effect. The central ridge of the bow also has three strips, but each of these has beaded decoration. The centre of the bow has a domed boss, and there is a smaller domed boss centred on the left side border of the bow. Damage has removed the boss from the right side.

The headplate is missing its frame and probably a second panel, but most of the inner panel remains, decorated with anthropomorphic features. Remains to either side of the bow may indicate the headplate frame was decorated with punched circles.

The underside is undecorated, but retains the lugs for the hinged pin and traces of iron corrosion.

Based on the bow decoration, the brooch may be a Hines Group XIV.
