Title |
Early Medieval great square-headed brooch fragment |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a cast copper-alloy great square-headed brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period, probably 6th century.
The bow bears evidence for a raised central ridge and one side ridge, the other side ridge missing from the fragment. The central ridge has a circular setting for a glass inset, now missing. A slightly raised border angles from the side ridges to the central ridge, and the bow projects past this where it would have connected to the headplate or footplate. The details remaining on the panels between the ridges indicate possible Style I beasts. The brooch has suffered from fire damege, obscuring detail and affecting the metal quality. This is visible on all the edges of the brooch and particularly the underside, such that in section the bow is D-shaped. The metal is rough and slightly porrous in texture, and feels 'vitrified'. The degree of damage to the brooch and alloy may indicate some loss of lead-content due to the heat of the fire. The fire damage also suggests a likeloy cremation burial. |
