Early Medieval gold sword pommel
Description
English: Early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) gold 'cocked hat' sword pommel, The object is sub triangular in form and sub rectangular in section. It has a curved upper surface which has a central domed area which is flanked by two sub triangular areas of filigree running to each end. These are formed of a rope like border which contains seven twisted wires. It is decorated on two sides with a filigree interlace formed of twisted wire flanked by smaller twisted wire borders. The whole object is bordered by an applied wire.

The object was the first pommel to be found with filigree decoration. It is now one of over 50, thanks to the discovery of the Staffordshire hoard.
