Title
Early Medieval cruciform brooch fragment, lead
Description
English: Early Medieval Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch fragment, lead, 5th-6th century. Head-plate and top-knob only. Integrally cast top-knob, semi-circular in section, domed in outline with groove at the junction with the rectangular sectioned trapezoidal collar. Trapezoidal head-plate; it is unclear if side wings have been broken off or if they were never present. The rest of the brooch is broken off at the base of the head-plate. The single lug on the reverse of the head is un-pierced, and so could not have supported a pin; it is bent to one side. Thick cream patina. Length 41.38mm, width of head plate at base 26.85mm, width of head plate at top 23.25mm, thickness of head plate 2.46mm, length of nipple 15.16mm, width of nipple 11.77mm, thickness of nipple 6.67mm, weight 17.52g.
