Title |
Early Medieval copper alloy strap end |
||
Description |
English: Early Medieval slightly bent Hiberno-Norse copper alloy strap end dating 875 to 950AD. It is decorated on both sides. On one face the main body is decorated in counter-relief with a sub rectangular panel of knotwork. Between this and the zoomorphic head terminal an engraved circle encloses a circlet of alternating raised lines and circles with a small round aperture at the centre. This is the same on both sides. On either side the 'strap' end terminates in a square panel containing a triangular knot, point to the end, and engraved linear fill below the two rivet holes either side of the point of the knot. On the other face the sub rectangular panel contains a repeated triangular scroll motif. On both faces the sub rectangular panels are bordered by bands of offset opposing tranverse lines. There are remnants of a metallic finish, probably gilding or silver.The sides taper from the split end before expanding around the engraved circle. It shares similarities with a Thomas (2004) Class F, but is longer than usual and has a comparatively short slot for the strap. Probably manufactured in Dublin for someone of note.
The length is 111mm, width 19mm, thickness 2 to 4mm, and the weight is 25.83g. There are no exact parallels on the database but the following share many characteristics though they are quite a bit shorter: NMS-627136; SWYOR-B557B2; and NARC-3835F4. |
