Title |
Early Medieval copper alloy plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: Early Medieval (Scandinavian) copper alloy trefoil brooch, 34mm long and wide and 3mm thick. The object is in fair condition with damage to edges and is coated with concreted mud and corrosion. Despite this its decoration can be seen and is a close parallel for DENO-E9A0F5. The brooch consists of three identical rectangular 'arms' which have rounded edges. The surface of each is engraved with a double linear border which contains a foliate design, described as 'stylised acanthus'. Where each arm meets the point is marked by an open circle within the border. This design leaves a central triangular area which should have a further circle in its centre, but this cannot be seen. The reverse has the remains of a catch plate and double lug. The lug, which would have held the pin in place, is positioned where two of the arms meet. The catch plate is positioned on the edge of the third arm and is represented by a small circular mark on the surface (lower right as shown).
The arrangement of the lug and the simplified design suggest that this brooch fits a type which is paralleled in Southern Scandinavia and was common throughout the Danelaw (Leahy, K.A. and Paterson, C. 2001, New light on the Viking Presence in Lincolnshire in 'Vikings and the Danelaw' Graham -Campbell et al 2001). |
