Title
Early Medieval coin : penny fragment
Description
English: Lead weight of roughly cylindrical form with the broken fragment of an Anglo-Saxon period penny mounted over the flat top. The roughly triangular fragment has had each corner bent over to grip the lead although the coin has now become separated from the weight.

The coin is somewhat accreted but the visible detail, comprising on the obverse a small cross with a pellet in each angle and the partial inscription HL[...], and on the reverse a temple facade and the inscription +RIS[...], makes it clear that it is a fragment of a so-called CHRISTIANA RELIGIO denier of the Carolingian king Loius the Pious (AD814-40).

The weight standard to which the weight is connected is uncertain but the piece is about one half of the weight of a Viking unit known as the eyrir. The weight with the coin included is 9.64g, the coin fragment itself weighing 0.38g. Probably later 9th to early 10th century.
