Title |
Early Medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy buckle of probably Early Medieval date, about 400 - 720 AD. The buckle frame is oval and the bar does not appear to be recessed or offset. The front of the frame is bevelled. The copper alloy pin survives. It is wrapped round the bar and curves downwards at the pint. It has a collar which is a raised platform decorated with transverse grooves. The plate is a single sheet of copper alloy folded lengthways with a slot for the pin. Both rectangular plates have two rows of three circular holes, one across the middle and one at the attachment end of the plate. The centre hole of the inner row has the remains of a copper alloy rivet in situ. The front plate is broken across the outer row of holes and has V shaped notches cut between the holes of this row. The whole object has a smooth olive green patina. Compare SF-084D12, SWYOR-214B31, SF-945BF5, SWYOR-D081E7 and IOW-DC1C85 for buckle frames of similar shape. |
