Title |
Early Medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: Early Medieval cast copper alloy buckle with integral plate and complete pin. The buckle has a single, narrow, oval loop with sets of three transverse grooves flanking the pin rest and running round the front and outer side of the loop. The pin is copper alloy, cast, looped 270 degrees through a pinhole and has raised rectangular section on the top, just after the loop. It is slightly bent over the frame at the tip. The plate is roughly rectangular with an irregular, stepped strap attachement end. As well as the oval hole through which the pin is looped there is a large T shaped hole in the centre of the plate (cross bar running transversely parallel to the loop) and to either side, at the ends of the cross bar of the T, are small circular holes, presumably for rivets. The sides of the plate have regular, short, diagonal grooves notching them. The end opposite the loop is stepped with square knops to each corner and a double stepped projection at the centre; this appears to be complete.
It measures 27.8mm long by 23.5mm wide and 5.6mm thick. It weighs 4.6grams. Cuddeford (2001) illustrates a very similar frame he suggests is 6th-7th century (page 14, No.f). West (1998, fig 20.3, p.136 and 21) also illustrates a buckle plate with similar T shaped cut outs from Coddenham Anglo Saxon cemetry which he dates to the 7th century with reference to a buckle with plate from Kingston Down, Kent. |
