Title
Early Medieval buckle
Description
English: A copper alloy Early Medieval buckle and plate. The buckle frame is D shaped but has two rounded projections with knops which extend from the outer edge of the frame, making the outer edge cross shaped. The outer edge of the frame is decorated with interlace patterns. The bar end of the frame is moulded into animal heads, viewed from above, so the bar is held in their mouths. These animals are in executed in the Anglo-Scandinavian Urnes Style. The frame projects past the bar slightly. The bar itself is circular in section. The back of the frame is not decorated. The plate is still attached to the frame but the pin is missing. The plate is rectangular and is a single piece of sheet folded round the bar with a slot for the pin. There would have been one rivet in each of the far corners, but only one survives. It has a flattened head. No close parallel has been found for this buckle. The most similar example found is NMS-5EE3D1 on the PAS database. It is dated to the eleventh century and a similar date is likely for this example, which is in much better condition.
