Title |
Early Medieval brooch |
||
Description |
English: Early Medieval cloisonné brooch (10th - 11th century AD, Late Anglo-Saxon).
The brooch is cast in copper alloy with substantial traces of gilding remaining. The brooch is circular in plan and originally had seven lobes around the circumference: one is now missing and a further five are damaged. Only one is complete and has an oval inset of black enamel or glass. There is a circumferential border, rising 1.2 mm and creating a recession to hold the cloisonné decoration. The central circular setting is filled with copper alloy wire cells arranged in a cruciform motif with crenulated edges. The cross is 4.3mm wide and infilled with a dark red enamel. Two of the opposing quadrants within the circle are filled with a light blue enamel, and the other two quadrants are filled with white enamel, which has survived in very good condition. The reverse is flat and gilded, with two corroded patches which are probably the remains of pin and catchplate. A similar, but not exact, example is recorded on this database: ESS-0A8B65. Diameter 22mm, thickness 3.5mm, weight 4.5g. |
