Early Medieval ansate brooch
Description
English: Middle Saxon Ansate brooch with moulded trefoil terminals with three engraved lines in each and triple transverse ribs on bow. Damaged double pin lug with spindle. Hattatt illustrates three examples of this type (nos. 1328, 1424 and 1424A), all said to be Norfolk finds. One was excavated at St Nicholas Street, Thetford (EAA 87 (1999) fig.36 no.7). This form of ansate brooch is the most common type recorded in Norfolk. See PAS refs NMS-317AA8 and NMS-6B7F41. Length 43mm, width 8mm. 8th – 9th century.
