Title
Early Medieval ansate brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Early Medieval copper-alloy ansate brooch dating to circa AD 700-1000. The surface of the brooch is rough and pitted and break at one (catch-plate) end worn way. The brooch is cast and parallel sided, with flat rectangular sectioned form and has squared off ends (one damaged). It has a humped central area. The front face has five almost square recessed panels, each with an asymmetric chip-carved design of amorphous zig zags. The rear face contains the remains of a double lug hinge at the extreme edges of one end an a astub of a lateral catch-plate at the other.

The brooch falls into Weetch's Type XI.A group of Early Medieval anstate brooches. Weetch dates type XI to the 9th and 10th centuries AD though notes that type XI.A appears to be a slightly early manifestation with origins in the eighth century (2014: 165). Consequently, a date of 700 to 1000 AD is suggested.

Length: 39.7mm; Width: 10.1mm; Thicknes: 2.5mm;  Weight: 7.31g.
