Title |
Early Medieval Sword |
||
Description |
English: An Early Medieval, copper alloy sword pommel of Petersen type O, dating from about AD 900 - 1120. It has five lobes, which decrease in width, thickness and height from the tallest in the centre to the outer ones. The lobes are square in plan at the base but taper in from the front and back to a rounded top. The lobes are joined at the base to a height of around 6mm, with a gap between them above this. The lobes at each end are solid, but the three central ones are hollow, presumably for the insertion of the tang. The base is flat. It is 62mm long, 21.3mm high and 14mm thick. It weighs 52.84g.
On the lower front and rear surfaces of each lobe is a rectangular recessed panel of decoration in relief. The outer lobes match each other, and seem to have the same pattern on the front and the back. The next lobes, the ones between the centre and the outer ones, also match each other, with the same design on all four panels. The centre one has a different design to the other lobes, and a different design on each face. The designs are interlace and billetted and carry traces of gilding. The outer lobes are too worn to see clearly. Two of the lobes show traces of silvering or a white metal coating above the decorated panels. Compare KENT-0AB911 which notes that: "this form is a wider form of Oakeshotts (1991) type M lobated Viking form, in the same group as sword types X11.10 - X11.14 dating from around 1050-1120, this would [fit] Petersen's (1919) type O for a similar period. This form is considered to be of English origin (Davidson 1962, 55-6), but is called "Viking" and "of late Viking style" by Oakeshott (1991, 78 and 81)." Compare also DENO-E9650B and PUBLIC-415955. |
