Title |
Early Medieval Strap Mount Fitting (possibly) |
||
Description |
English: Zoomorphic cruciform mount. Cruciform/quatrefoil shape. Each of the four lugs is pierced for attachment using rivets. Central irregular octagonal boss with moulded zoomorphic or possibly human head decoration. Boss is concave at back.
There are many other examples of similar cruciform domed mounts on the PAS database, such as HAMP3572, HAMP-5F6592, WAW-4B1B36, BH-922C44, NMS-5B7B13 (gilded), SF-9E9C95 (enamelled), IOW-C745C2 (relief-decorated), SUSS-D0A326 (gilded). These all appear to date from the 13th or 14th centuries and may be mounts from books, the domed shape protecting the leather of the book cover from rubbing. |
