Title
Early Medieval Stirrup Mount from Wickenby
Description
English: Copper alloy with gilding

Stirrup Mount. Zoomorphic Stirrup Mount. Probably of Williams (1997) Class A Type 8. Cast plate with a triangular apex with a slightly countersunk central aperture of diameter 4mm. The identification is suggested by a right angled flange on the broader bottom edge, which has two blind fixing holes of diameter 4mm above it, principally marked in relict surface patination. A trace of gilding is retained on the display face. The apex is reminiscent of the beast head terminal of earlier strap ends. These appearances are deceptive, as much surface detail is lost, revealing a metal core of a dark brown tint often associated with Anglo-Scandinavian metalwork. Suggested date: early Medieval to Medieval, 1025-1100.

Height: 39.9mm, Width: 22.5mm, Thickness (clear of flange): 3.2mm, Weight: 9.86gms.
