Title |
Early Medieval Spatula from Spridlington |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy
Spatula. A double ended implement with expanded and flattened spatulate ends with a rectangular section stem between them. Both spatulae resemble those found at one end of Roman styli serving as erasers for use with waxed tablets, though a stylus bears a point for writing at one of its ends. A double ended form is more usual for ear scoops, though the bowls are rounded. Middle Saxon spatulate implements from both graves and occupation sites, made in a range of materials including copper alloy and bone, may have served a range of functions, from cosmetic to artistic; in the former case they might form part of sets or girdle groups. Ferrous corrosion adheres to the stem towards one end, possibly from the loop retaining such a set. Suggested date:Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 43.2mm, Width: 7mm, Thickness (stem, clear of rust): 1.7mm, Weight: 1.38gms. |
