Title
Early Medieval Small Square-Headed Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Early Medieval cast copper-alloy and gilded brooch. The brooch consists of the head-plate and upper bow of a small square-headed brooch of the early Anglo-Saxon period, 6th century AD. The head-plate is complete, with a small inner gilded panel and an outer frame which is gilded around outer edge. The base of the upper bow connects to the lower edge of the inner panel. The bow has a broad central ridge which is gilded vertically along each side where it connects to the inner panel. The inner panel is positioned immediately above the bow. At the top of the central ridge of the bow is a raised rectangular panel which is gilded and contains a raised decoration similar to that shown in MacGregor and Bolick 1993, p118 no 13.13, which is described as a discontinuous cable moulding. There are only two pieces of this cabling.

The reverse of the head-plate retains the D-shaped projecting hinge lugs and the base of the iron hinge pin which is corroded in place; the pin is now missing. The brooch measures 174.3mm long, 15.5mm wide, 7.6mm thich and it weighs 3.02 grams.
