Title
Early Medieval Saxon polyhedral headed pin
Description
English: Early medieval pin; cast copper alloy dress pin with polyhedral head. The pin is of Anglo-Saxon manufacture and probably dates to the 8th-10th century. The head is a truncated cuboid shape, decorated with punched ring and dot decoration. Both the side faces and each of the diagonal faces has a single ring and dot in the centre, while the front and back faces each have four rings and dots, arranged in a diamond pattern. The shaft has a circular cross section and is broken off about 10mm from the head. There is no collar between the head and the shaft, which may suggest a somewhat earlier date within the above date range.

Length 21.24mm, width (head) 7.70mm, depth (head) 5.35mm, thickness (shaft) 2.41mm, weight 2.49g.

Compare, for example, the pins from Meols in the catalogue by Griffiths et al, page 67 (illustrated on page 74, plate 10), especially pin 357 which is very similar.
