Title
Early Medieval Polyhedral Weights
Description
English: A group of five lead alloy objects, originally recorded as polyhedral weights of Early Medieval date (c. 400-1066), but now thought to be Post Medieval buckshot.

Each consists of a globule of metal impressed with a number of circular depressions. Two weights have a black patina and three of the weights have a medium brown patina. They range in size from 3.3-5.5mm. The total weight is 2.39g. For similar weights please see PAS record ID: SWYOR-E809B3.

Though recorded as polyhedral weights, the number of similar finds raises the possibility that these are pellets fired from a gun, similar to grape shot but smaller, and of Post Medieval date. Compare examples of buckshot in Harding (2012) "Lead Shot of the English Civil War", for example, Plate 21.
