Title
Early Medieval Net Sinker from Winteringham
Description
English: Lead

Net Sinker. Weight made by rolling a rectangular fragment of cast lead sheet of thickness 3.0 mm with an overlapping seam round a former - possibly the selvedge of a net - with a diameter of circa 7.0 mm. Patinated overall. This object resembles barrel shaped or tubular weights from Flixborough of Early Medieval date; these fall on either side of the Middle Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian divide. It is tempting to see their distribution as a reflection of the range of fishermen working from or supplying such centres, of which a community at West Halton might be another nearby example. This simple form of fishing weight was probably long-lived, though the local examples invite an early dating when found on riparian sites in North Lincolnshire. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 750-950.

Length: 18.7mm, Width (overall): 16.2mm, Weight: 15.62gms.
