Title |
Early Medieval Ingot |
||
Description |
English: White metal possible ingot. Cast oval fragment of a dense dark grey metal. There are three aligned angled slashes on one side, and multiple annular stamps of diameter 4mm (at least two) and of diameter 2mm (at least three) on the other side. The Viking Age predilection for annular or ring-and-dot decoration - as for example, on racket headed pins of the 9th century (cf D. Haldenby, various dates, re Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire) - might suggest a broad affinity, or perhaps a function as a casual trial piece. The object might also relate to a class of dark pellet-like ingots intermittently reported from the region; usually of base rather than noble metal, these might nevertheless be reduced to this form by a hefty wallop of a hammer. The mass of the object does not, however, relate to contemporary systems for the measurement of silver bullion: it equates to an overweight quarter ounce in modern terms, or to an even more overweight equivalent of earlier versions. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 850-1000.
Length: 24.5mm, Width: 16.6mm, Thickness: 3mm, Weight: 7.69gms. |
