Early Medieval Great Square Headed Brooch
Description
English: Fragment of Early Saxon copper alloy great square-headed brooch, part of footplate with no surviving original edge, part of two triangular inner panels. The inner panel frame is cable moulded, the median bar has a narrow central line of beading. Scar of missing catch-plate on reverse. Surviving length 20mm. Surviving width 19mm. 3mm thick. Weighs 4.12g. The breaks are ancient. Hines 1997 Group XVI. Mid 6th century.
