Early Medieval Great Square Headed Brooch
Description
English: 2 burnt joining fragments of an Early Saxon Great square-headed brooch of Leeds Group A4 and Hines 1997 Group XVII. , broken across the inner panel of the incomplete head-plate (all of outer edge missing) with a rectangular inner panel containing counter-relief Style I zoomorphic decoration, with the lower edge arched at the junction with the bow. Separate stud with broken discoidal head, broken footplate, inner panel with stylised animal heads. Twin perforated lugs and broken catch-plate on reverse. Some worn ancient breaks, other more granular and possibly recent breaks such as where the two pieces join. Surviving length 99mm. Surviving width 48mm. 2mm thick. Weighs 38.52g. Cf. examples from Londesborough, Kenninghall and Suffolk (Hines plates 68a, 68b and 72a).
