Early Medieval Great Square Headed Brooch
Description
English: Bow of an Early Saxon gilt copper alloy Great square-headed brooch with ancient breaks and minor recent damage at both ends. The reverse is flat and on the front there are three longitudinal ribs, a broad median one and a narrower one along both edges. Gilding is confined to the front. At the top a small part of the headplate remains, with moulded decoration on the front and the lower parts of the stumps of a double pin lug on the reverse. At the lower end, as part of a repair, there is a pair of drilled holes, one of which contains a copper alloy rivet. Length 31.5mm. Width at mid-point of the bow 16.8mm. c.530 - c.570. FLO12
