Early Medieval Great Square Headed Brooch
Description
English: Three fragments of an Early Saxon gilt copper alloy great square-headed brooch:

1. Bow disk comprising a damaged gilt disc with central disc-headed rivet within stamped radiating double-triangles with an annulet at the point. Diam.20.5mm. Length of rivet 8mm.

2. Fragment of footplate rounded side lobe with remains of silver sheet appliqué. Surviving length 9mm. Width 14mm. 2mm thick.

3. Fragment of footplate with rounded terminal lobe covered with fragment of silver sheet appliqué, part of grooved inner panel flanked by lines of stamped annulets and with a horizontal lines of three stamped double-triangles with an annulet at the pointprojecting from junction with the terminal disc. Surviving length 36mm. Width 24mm. 2.5mm thick.

Each fragment has traces of vivianite. Recent breaks. Mid to late 6th century.
