Title
Early Medieval Gaming Piece or Weight
Description
English: Complete cast lead alloy Early Medieval probable weight or possible gaming piece . The item is globular in shape with a flattened, but not totally flat, base and a cut-away flat top with the top of an embedded Anglo-Saxon pin protruding from the centre. The pin head is of the spherical or globular variety with linear spirals for decoration. It is possible that a further object is embedded in the base of the gaming piece and a flat circular area, possibly of copper-alloy, is distinct from the surrounding lead alloy of the weight but is worn smooth and impossible to identify further.

Weights and Gaming pieces of this type, with embedded pieces of insular metal work, polished stones, bones and other items are Viking or Anglo-Scandinavian in culture and this item has therefore been dated AD. c.800-1000.

NB: A second weight/gaming piece of Early Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian/Viking) date was found nearby by the same finder.

See SWYOR-4F2B32 for a similar item and references to further similar finds.
