Title
Early Medieval Frankish equal-armed brooch
Description
English: Early Medieval Frankish cast copper alloy equal-armed or 'ansate' brooch. The iron pin is broken off but leaves a lump of corrosion on the reverse of the head - it appears to have been held between two lugs, although one is obscured by the corrosion. Sub-circular head; arched D-sectioned bow which thickens towards the middle; sub-rectangular foot; on the reverse of the foot is a damaged catchplate which is set at one side (the right side when viewed from the reverse). There are striations on the head and foot which appear to be an attempt at crude decoration - possibly crosses? Length 30.9mm, width across head 9.5mm, width across foot 7.1mm, width across bow 3.7mm, thickness as bent c.13.5mm, thickness across middle of bow 4.1mm, thickness across head and lugs 8.7mm, weight 3.52g.

A very similar brooch is illustrated in Hattatt's Visual Catalogue, p.380, fig 239, no.1321, described as a Frankish Merovingian period equal-armed brooch. The brooch was originally published in Hattatt's Brooches of Antiquity. This type of brooch was used in England in the 8th and 9th centuries.

Just one other brooch of this type is recorded on the PAS database, DOR-3D3695 from Urchfont, Wiltshire - that has clearer incised cross decoration on the head and foot.

Just two other Frankish equal-armed brooches from Nottinghamshire are recorded on the PAS database - SWYOR-B867A5 which has a similar though not identical simple design, from Gringley on the Hill, and LVPL-5C7577 from Collingham.
