Title
Early Medieval D-Shaped Buckle
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle of Early Early-Medieval date (c. AD 450 - c. AD 600). Length 28.9mm, width 36.85mm and 10.1mm thick. Weight 29.86g.

The pin and folded plate are missing. The buckle frame is D-shaped, as viewed in plan. It is convex at the front and largely flat at the rear. The narrowed bar is generally sub-circular in cross-section and has a length of about 7.0mm and a maximum diameter of 3.7mm. Mid-way along the length of the bar there is a swelling on the inner part and wear on the outer part, opposite the swelling. The swelling is due to the buckle having had a folded plate and the wear has been created by the movement of the pin loop. At the top of the outside edge of the frame there is a slightly worn area where the pin tip made regular contact.

The frame is robust and is in a stable condition. The patina is lost and the surfaces are covered with copper alloy corrosion products. There is no evidence for melting or burning.
