Title
Early Medieval Coin: Penny of Offa of Mercia
Description
English: Silver coin. Penny of Offa of Mercia (757-796), as kindly identified by the finder. The obverse is unusual for the division of the royal name, which more usually appears on a single line (cf. North 1994 plate 4, nos 24-26).

Obverse description: Legend over two lines separated by a pelleted line, with initial cross and longer shafted cross on its side below legend. Pellets appear between letters F and F. Possibly pellets at 12 O'clock.

Obverse inscription: +.OFF / A REX

Reverse description: Four petalled flower with a line flanked by pellets on each petal. A small cross on a long shaft passes through its centre, with its head between petals. There is also a tiny cross pommee between each pair of petals. The cross shaft springs from the letter N, while P-shaped figures occupy the equivalent spaces to left and right (see inscription).

Reverse inscription: : Possibly DVD

Diameter: 16.5mm, Weight: 1.17gms, die axis: possibly 2.
