Title |
Early Medieval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy Buckle. Cast D shaped buckle frame with a thickened outer edge of rounded section and a narrowed strap bar grasped by three-dimensionally modelled beast head terminals with prominent ears or eyes represented by indentations and protruberant muzzles. A rectangular sheet metal plate of thickness 0.6mm and length 21mm is wrapped around the strap bar and is secured by a corroded iron rivet, with the curving edge of a further rivet hole at its end; there are traces of a rocker work saltire decoration on the display face of the plate. This piece respects a Viking taste for zoomorphic decoration, as is to be expected in a Danelaw context. Suggested date: Early Medieval to Medieval, 1000-1100.
Length (buckle frame): 19.7mm, Height: 26.7mm, Thickness (frame): 7.1mm, Weight: 10.83gms. |
