Early Medieval Buckle
Description
English: Early Saxon copper alloy "shield-on-tongue" buckle pin with traces of solder on the reverse for the attachment of a loop. On both edges of the shield there is a vertical moulded groove immediately before the springing of the D-sectioned pin. A small and irregular blind hole on the reverse is a casting flaw. Marzinzik 2003, Type I.2. A very large example, cf. ibid. plate 3, Alfriston grave 48. Length 42.5mm. Width 20.5mm. Thickness of shield 8mm. Weight 26.3g. 6th century.
