Title
Early Medieval Buckle
Description
English: A complete but corroded cast copper alloy Early Medieval buckle with zoomorphic detail.

The buckle frame is D-shaped in plan with a narrowed strap bar; both the frame and strap bar are sub-circular in section. The terminals of the frame are zoomorphic in form with the strap bar connecting the two animal heads. These are stylised animal heads which are found on various objects from this period and have variously been interpreted as dogs, bears, dragons and even dolphins. They have a rounded heads with inset almond-shaped eyes and an elongated upturned snout with this detail picked out in relief moulding.

The centre of the buckle is filled with iron corrosion but within this are traces of a fragments of a copper-alloy buckle plate and possibly part of a copper-alloy pin. The buckle frame has lost patches of it's original surface through corrosion but has traces of a dark brown-green patina.

Compare with SWYOR-993160, SWYOR-F075E4, DUR-F45F98 and YORYM-667D71.

Dated c. 900- 1100 AD.
