Title
Early Medieval Buckle
Description
English: An incomplete and heavily worn cast copper-alloy single looped buckle with integral plate of late Early-Medieval to early Medieval date (c. AD 1000-1150). This artefact is incomplete as the pin is missing, along with the lower portions of the integrally cast plate. The buckle is 'D' shaped in plan and sub-oval in section, with an elongated convex in section extension from the outer central edge; the detail is obscured but it is possible that it might have represented a now indiscernible zoomorphic motif. From the buckle frame a sub-rectangular in plan and flat in section buckle plate extends; this narrows in width from the frame to the point of the uneven break. In the centre of the buckle plate is a circular aperture, with traces of a secondary aperture visible below this at the point where the plate has subsequently broken. The surface of the plate is extensively worn, but traces of cast detailed decoration remain but are now unclear. The underside of this buckle is broadly flat, with the area surrounding the 'D' shaped aperture slightly recessed. This artefact has a dark red brown colour overall, and similar examples can be seen recorded on this database as HAMP-C9AB76, HAMP-348BE5, SF-D06B94 and BM-933343.

This buckle measures 30.8mm in length, 18mm in width, 2.7mm in thickness and weighs 2.76 grams.
