Title |
Early Medieval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: Early Saxon copper alloy buckle with an iron pin. The frame is oval and of very slender cross-section with the bar narrowed internally. The square plate consists of a rectangular sheet folded in half widthways, with two rivets, a pin slot, and very slight frame recesses that are probably the result of wear. On the front of the plate there are two notches near the centre of the inside edge and a median flute flanked by finely engraved lines. There is also a fine line along one side. On the other side such a line exists only for a short length near the fold, the remainder stretch being slightly narrower, suggesting that the line may have been for marking out before a final trimming. The pin is of rectangular cross-section and the its blunt end is drooping. Frame 11 x 26.5mm. Plate 20.5 x 20.5mm. The frame and plate are now fixed by the corroded pin loop at 90 degress to each other but the overall length is c.29.5mm. Broadly comparable with Marzinzik 2003, 47-8 and 304, Type II.21. 6th century. |
