Early Medieval Buckle
Description
English: Late Saxon copper alloy buckle. Incomeplete oval frame, shallow D-shaped section with median arris on upper face, with large stylised, worn animal head knop on outside edge. The triangular animal head has rounded ears with shallow blind holes, separated by a possible notch for the (missing) pin, and tapers to a snout with one surviving dot nostil. Further details too worn to discern. . Maximum surviving length: 21mm. Maximum surviving width: 30mm. Perhaps 9th century. See discussion of similar buckles, and a more complete and elaborate example from Norwich, in Huddle and Geake in Emery (2007, 198 - 199, fig.5.90, SF102).
