Title |
Early Medieval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy buckle frame with integral plate in corroded condition. The frame is single loop and sub-round with a central triangular knop on the outer edge, reminiscent of a zoomorphic head, flanked by foliate knops. Both have Anglo-Scandinavian style line decoration. The underside of the central knop is slightly hollow. The off-set bar probably had similar moulded decoration, now corroded. The pin hole is filled with corroded iron, the remains of the pin. The integral, split-end plate, the front face missing, expands slightly towards the attachment edge. There is one central rivet hole and two at the attachment edge. Length 46 mm (frame 27mm), width of frame 20mm. Width of plate at maximum 14mm. Maximum thickness (at bar) 6mm, minimum thickness (plate) 1.5mm. Dates to the 11th century.
