Title
Early Medieval Ansate Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy early-medieval ansate brooch dating from AD 700-900. One end of the bow and terminal are missing.

The brooch has a square flat terminal with a semi-circular rounded projection to each side. This terminal is decorated with an incised cross saltire formed from four lentoid recesses. There is a recessed ring and dot on the two rounded projections. Behind this terminal is a pair of projecting pin lugs supporting an iron axis bar. The pin is missing.

The bow projects from the terminal at an angle and is straight. It is decorated with five longitudinal incised lines. At the apex of the bow is a flat panel, with decoration which matches that on the terminal. The other part of the bow and second terminal are missing. The breaks are worn and patinated. The whole brooch has a smooth dark green patina. It is 25.6mm long, 14.8mm wide and 15.2mm thick. 3.25g.

This brooch is an ansate brooch with cross-shaped terminals of Weetch's 'Ansate Type VIlI.B' (Weetch 2013, 156-158). Weetch dates this type to the 8th or 9th century. Smaller fragments of similar brooches can be seen at FAKL-1A4246 and NMS-D25ED4, and a very close parallel from Norfolk is now in the Ashmolean Museum (Hattatt 2000, fig. 239, no. 1326).
