Title |
Early Medieval Ansate Brooch |
||
Description |
English: Near complete copper-alloy ansate brooch of mid-late Early Medieval date, AD c.700-900. The brooch is bow-tie shaped with a flat, flared sub-triangular plate to either end forming the terminals and a narrowed arched bow between. The only decoration consists of two pairs of transverse parallel incised lines on the face of each flared terminal adjacent to where they abut the arched bow. On the reverse of the brooch are the remains of the pin fitting mechanism consisting of a pierced semi-circular lug and the stub of a catchplate. On the reverse it can also be noted that he arched part of the bow is concave so that it is C-shaped in section. In section the brooch is a splayed 'W' in shape hence the secondary name of caterpillar brooch which is sometimes applied to these items.
For an already recorded example of such a brooch see: LANCUM-2322A4. |
