Title
Early Medieval Ansate Brooch
Description
English: Less than one half of a Middle Saxon to Late Saxon white-metal coated (tinned or silvered) copper alloy Ansate brooch, one arm with an incomplete double pin lug on the reverse, and part of the bow. The front would have been divided into five square or rectangular areas surrounded by low ribs and containing many fine transverse engraved grooves bisected by a single longitudinal groove. Two such areas and part of a third on the top of the bow are extant. At the terminal an additional narrow transverse zone contains a row of very short oblique lines. There is a very small lateral lobe at both ends of each transverse rib. Length more than 23mm. Width 13.5mm. Thörle 2002, Tafel 53-4, Gruppe XI B 2. Other finds of this type in England include examples from Grimston, Norfolk (HER 3579), Narford, Norfolk (HER 54758, NMS-20C9A3), Thelnetham, Suffolk (HER 016) and Lewes, East Sussex (SUSS-040CE0). 9th century.
