Early Medieval Anglo-Saxon Sceat
Description
English: An early Medieval Anglo-Saxon silver sceat of a Danish type originating in Ribe. Series X, Type 31, dated to c. 710-c.760 (or later) AD. Cf. Abramson 2006, No. X100; pp 15 and 39. The sceat is in excellent condition.

Obverse: Elegant monster in flight left, looking back, gaping jaws biting raised trefoil tail, crest before, one pellet below head, prominent member and clawed feet below. Line border within beaded border.

Reverse: Facing, radiate 'Wodan' head. Rays (or flowing mane of hair and curved beard) indicating power. Cross either side with pellets on each end. All within line border with outer beaded border around much of the perimeter.
