Title |
Early Medieval (middle to late Anglo-Saxon) ansate brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy fragment of an Early Medieval (middle to late Anglo-Saxon) ansate brooch with circular terminals, dating to AD 700-1000. It consists of one circular terminal and a portion of the bow. The terminal is more oval in plan and bears a engraved cross with one arm parallel to the bow. The cross is incised on a slightly raised lozenge shaped field, which is defined by four shallow grooves. The back face of the terminal has two parallel sub-rectangular pierced lugs; one lug is incomplete while the other is blocked by a fragment of the pin bar. The lugs are set parallel to the bow. The bow is pointed oval in cross-section and curves gently towards the break, which occurs almost at its original mid way.
