Title
Early Medieval (Saxon) tweezers
Description
English: An Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) copper alloy arm from a pair of tweezers (5th-6th century). The arm has been made from copper alloy sheet that flares to a width of 11.34mm, before the end curves in. There is some damage to the lower edge and the curved section is now missing. It has also broken across the loop and the shape has been distorted through damage. The front surface is decorated with two incised lines, one running down each long side forming a border. There are five punched ring and dot motifs running vertical down the centre. The last ring and dot also forms the central one in a line of three running horizontal along the end. Patchy mid-green patina.

A very similar pair of tweezers (no. 38.12) were found at Shakenoak, now in the Ashmolean. The decoration is the same but this example is slightly larger (MacGregor amd Bolick 1993: 221-224).

Dimensions: length 42.12mm; width 2.71mm expanding to 11.34mm; thickness 1.42mm; weight 1.22g.
