Title
Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) cruciform brooch (fragment).
Description
English: A copper-alloy fragment probably of an Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon), cruciform brooch, dating to AD 500-600. It consists of a sub-trapezoidal fragment with a sub-rectangular cross-section. The front face has a cast decoration depicting a bird's head with pellet eye and hooked beak; the with headframe is decorated with annulet stamps. The back face is flat and undecorated.

Birds' heads are very common in the Anglo-Saxon decorated metalwork. The lateral wards of girdle hangers have often similar terminal, even lappets and brooches' knobs have that shape but, this fragment seems more likely to be one of the two projecting bird's heads at the end of the terminal of a cruciform brooch.

In 2000 an almost complete brooch (SF3889) was found in the same field and this fragment seems to fit the missing part.

Cf West (1998, p. 140, fig. 24, no. 9).
